For the most part I agree, and I am highly cynical too.

My point though is that while "the country is run by the rich and the corporate for their own benefit" as you say, they must maintain the pretense of a representative government responsive to the will of the people. That pretense is fading quickly into the transparency of naked oligarchic/corporate rule. While Joe Sixpack does not see this and the devotees of Bushwa don't care as long as "their man" is at the helm, many common Americans are beginning to see that the emperor has no clothes. The ruling oligarchs are at risk of losing "the consent of the governed" and this is not a trivial thing to lose since it must be replaced by outright political suppression/police
state tactics of some sort. This is inefficient, and while I think it will be employed if needed, it is far better and far cheaper to have a bamboozled populace that thinks it is free and that thinks that it lives in a democracy.
